7 Playwriting Contests and Submissions Websites Every Playwright Should Know

Many playwrights are searching for theatre and festival websites where they can submit their plays. Below are 7 play submission websites every playwright should be familiar with!
1. The Playwright's Center - provides listing of various writing opportunities. The site has a search option where you can search listings by state or by category.  This is useful if you are searching for something specific, though they don't provide an overview where you can see all the opportunities posted.

2. The Playwriting Contests & Play Submission Helper is dedicated to providing links to various submission opportunities for playwrights, the site has over 350 theater and festival listings in simple spreadsheet format. What makes this website great for playwrights is all the opportunities listed here accept e-mail/electronic submissions, meaning you can submit quickly to a ton of playwriting contests and other submission opportunities. Another thing is that the opportunities are listed in spreadsheet format with all the important information provided for easy scrolling. This site is highly recommended.

3. http://www.burryman.com - the Burryman is a writer's resource website providing links to theaters with submission opportunities. The opportunities posted here are sorted by month. Not much in the way of features, but still useful.

4. http://enavantplaywrights.yuku.com/ - a message board for playwrights. Opportunities are sorted by section and each opportunity is presented in each post.  Another great resource for a playwright especially if you are looking for the latest submission opportunity. But if you are looking for something simple and easy to browse, this may not be for you because you need to click on each post to see the details which you may find annoying at some time.

5. http://nycp.blogspot.com/ - one of the best playwright resources around. NYC playwrights is always updated, giving playwrights all the latest opportunities with detailed instructions.

6. http://www.stageplays-forum.com/ - message board for playwrights which offers more than play submission opportunities. The site provides opportunities, writing tips and stories of success in playwriting. You can also post questions here about playwriting.

7. Play Submissions Guide For Playwrights  - Site to guide you through the play submission process.  Simple, but excellent words of advice.

There are many more playwright resource websites out there but these are among the best ones which you can find. To be successful in your submissions, remember to read and follow the rules of the each theatre or festival. Submit to theatres in which your play's genre or subject matter fits, as your play has a better chance of being produced if you target your submission to the right artistic directors and literary managers are looking for.  Good luck!

  1. I'm a co-owner of a theater company called Quirky Productions. We're currently looking for one acts that are 10-20 minutes with 3 to 5 characters for a one-act festival. The characters should be 3 dimensional and the plot should have a beginning middle and end. We are looking for contemporary-style plays starring people in their late teens-twenties. We will be accepting submissions until December 20th and then deciding which plays to do in the following week. The plan is to perform the first week of February. I'd love you to submit something! If you have any questions feel free to ask! If you want to submit something, please email your submission to quirkyproductionsofficial@gmail.com. Thanks!

  5. My name is Gladys Muturi and I am playwright in need of your help. I wrote a stage adaptation play called White Mama.

A story based on a Robert Downs novel about Estelle Malone, an elderly widow who lives in a New York Apartment becomes a foster mother to an African American juvnille B.T. Williamson for the support money to pay her bills. When Estelle gets an eviction notice from her apartment, B.T. enters a brutal boxing match to fight for the money that Estelle needs. The two of them may have nothing in common but in the end, a special kind of friendship has grown in between them.

So far, I have send my scripts to every theater and festivals and still nothing back from any theaters or festivals.

I plan on booking my play at the Black Rock Center for the Arts (Germantown, MD) or at the Rockville Little Theatre (Rockville, MD) for rehearsals and premiere of White Mama.
Unfortunately, I have a little pocket change that is not enough for the theater to book for rehearsals and performance of White Mama.

With your help, it would be good opportunity to show my work as a playwright and entertain the audience.

Any amount is fine!!!!So please donate!!!! God bless!!!
    Help spread the word!

  6. Hi

We are currently looking for plays and I would much appreciated if you could share our call on Twitter and on your website. Below some wording for the show. Thanks for sharing. All writers invited to submit from all over the world.

After our successful runs of Shorts @ The Canal and The Twilight Hour at Canal Cafe Theatre, Union Theatre and Etcetera Theatre, we are inviting all writers to submit a play no longer than
15-minute, for "The Twilight Hour" season 2.
The show will be based on The Twilight Zone TV series to be performed at the award-winning Canal Cafe
Theatre a renowned comedy and theatre venue in London.

A selection process will follow and if your play is chosen, it will be
assigned to an emerging director. Play will then be rehearsed and then
    staged for 4 nights. Dates 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th November.
An excellent opportunity for writers to see their work come to life in
    front of an audience.
